The inspiration. Shown in the last photo: the rainy, lamp-lit park world of Leonid Afremov, the beloved palette-knife painter. Selena stepped into that world and made it her own — no figures, just lamplight, rain, and her deep green and gold. She did just enough different. Inspiration is how art has always been made: one artist's spark, carried forward by another's hand.

Selena painted this after her trip to New York — the rainy, lamp-lit parks of that city were still in her eyes, the same parks Afremov made famous, his Central Park nights among them.

It has always been this way: artists are inspired by what they see, and by those who painted before them. Portrait painters are inspired by a beautiful human figure; landscape artists look at a scene and draw it.
